Brexit, Settled Status and Citizenship application. Do you need a Certified Translation?

31 1 20 BREXIT

BREXIT IS AROUND THE CORNER! The UK is scheduled to leave the EU 31st January 2020. The government is ending the priority given to EU migrants over those from other countries. If you’re an EU citizen living in the UK, you and your family will be able to apply to the EU Settlement Scheme to continue living in the UK after 30 June 2021, or 31 December 2020 if Britain leaves the bloc without a deal. The security minister, Brandon Lewis, has recently declared that EU people who do not apply before the residency deadline may be removed from UK. If your application is successful, you’ll get either settled or pre-settled status. You may refer to the Government website for eligibility criteria.

If you are granted settled status, you will be able to stay in the UK indefinitely (provided you don’t spend more than five consecutive years outside the UK). You may apply for British Citizenship, work in the UK, study in the UK, use the NHS, and access public welfare programmes. Family members may join you with a Family Visa.

On the other hand, many British people are applying for citizenship of an EU country. If your grandparents were born in France, or if you have married an Italian citizen, and you wish to secure your right to work and travel around the EU after Brexit, without restrictions, you may apply to become a citizen of their birth country.

Even though the process varies, depending on your application, you will usually require to translate some documents, such as:

✓ Birth certificate

✓ Marriage certificate

✓ Employment letters

✓ Details of any criminal convictions, if applicable

How to Get a Name Change After Marriage

husband surname deed poll

Contrary to popular belief, a woman’s surname does not automatically change to her husband’s surname upon marriage.  A marriage certificate simply records the names of the couple who are marrying. After your marriage, it is your own personal choice what you want your surname to be.
If you decide to follow the British tradition, you can take your husband’s surname, or decide to adopt a double-barrelled surname. The two elements of the new surname can be linked by a hyphen or kept separate e.g. Bennet-Darcy or Bennet Darcy.

In both cases, one of the easiest way to prove that you committed yourself to using your new name for all purposes (which will give you the right to change your surname on your Passport, Driving Licence, Bank Account, etc.) is to execute a Deed Poll.

Unmarried women can choose to adopt their partner’s surname, too. In fact, across the UK, people can change their name through a Deed Poll at any time, provided they do not intend to deceive or defraud.

A Deed of Change of Name (more commonly known as a Deed Poll) is a written legal document, not a simple certificate. At Baraka UK Deed Poll, we deliver a proven and trusted service to make sure your Deed Poll is delivered legally and professionally, carrying our official seal, saving you time and money. By using our service, legally changing your name by Deed Poll is easy, straight forward and stress-free.

Baraka UK Deed Poll, once signed by yourself and co-signed by your witness, is a documentary evidence that you have changed your name and that you are legally binding yourself to using your new name. Therefore, it will enable you to apply for a new passport and driving licence, and change your name on your bank account and all other records. A Deed Poll drafted by Baraka UK Deed Poll is an English legal document, and is recognised by all UK Government Departments and UK companies and organisations.

READY TO TAKE YOUR HUSBAND’S SURNAME?

Join the thousands who have already applied for a Deed Poll to change their name. Fill in our Application Form and securely pay online. Your Deed Poll will be posted to your address within 24 hours, by recorded delivery, free of charge.

If you still have any question, we will be happy to help you. Please contact us today.

Child Deed Poll Application Service

CHILD deed poll POSTER.png

Today, Baraka UK Deed Poll is proud to offer the Child Deed Poll Application Service (with parental consent).

👶🏽 Can I change my child’s name?
A child’s legal name can easily be changed by Deed Poll providing everyone with parental responsibility (PR) for the child consents to the name change.

Deed of Change of Name (more commonly known as a Deed Poll) is a written legal document, not a simple certificate.

By executing the Deed Poll (signing, dating and having it witnessed) on behalf of your son or daughter, you are committing yourself to:

1. Abandoning the use of his/her former name
2. Using his/her new name at all times
3. Requiring all persons to address him/her by his/her new name

At Baraka UK Deed Poll, we deliver a proven and trusted service to make sure your child’s Deed Poll is delivered legally and professionally, carrying our official seal, saving you time and money. By using our service, legally changing your child’s name by Deed Poll is easy, straight forward and stress-free.

Baraka UK Deed Poll, once signed by the parent(s) having parental responsibility and co-signed by a witness, is a documentary evidence that you have changed your child’s name and that you are legally binding to using his/her new name. Therefore, it will enable you to apply for a his/her passport, and change his/her name at school, GP Surgery, Bank, etc. A Deed Poll drafted by Baraka UK Deed Poll is an English legal document, and is recognised by all UK Government Departments and UK companies and organisations.

Please note: Parental responsibility is a legal term; it means that you are responsible for, and have the right to be consulted about, the child’s health, education, religion and welfare. To change a child’s name, those with parental responsibility must consent to the name change.

In the United Kingdom, the mother always has PR, the father will also have PR if:

➡️ England & Wales: Married to the mother at birth, or named on the birth certificate from 1st December 2003.
➡️ Northern Ireland: Married to the mother at birth, or named on the birth certificate from 15th April 2002.
➡️ Scotland: Married to the mother at any time after birth, or named on the birth certificate from 4th May 2006.
➡️ No Authority (such as the Passport Office, School, GP surgery, etc.) would allow a child to be known by another name without satisfying themselves that everyone with parental responsibility has consented to the name change. For more information regarding PR, please refer to the UK Government website.

PLEASE NOTE: If both parents have parental responsibility, but consent from one parent i.e. the mother or father cannot be obtained, unfortunately Baraka UK Deed Poll cannot issue a Deed Poll for this child. In this case, the parent who wish to change the name of his/her child can decide to apply for a Specific Issue Court Order. If you want to instruct a lawyer, you can find a Solicitor accredited by the Law Society.

CPD Award Achieved for 2019/2020

cpd_certificate-page-001

I’m proud to have completed the Institute of Translation and Interpreting annual Continuing Professional Development programme for this year. It’s been a challenge, but I made the choice to focus on my professional development, and to invest in my career and knowledge

CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and is the term used to describe the learning activities certified translators and other professionals engage in to develop and enhance their abilities.

CPD combines different methodologies to learning, such as training workshops, conferences and seminars, lectures organised by universities, e-learning programs.

Engaging in Continuing Professional Development ensures that both academic and practical qualifications do not become out-dated or obsolete; The ITI Code of Professional Conduct requires ITI Members to undertake CPD, as appropriate.

I believe that my commitment to CPD is beneficial to my clients because they know that I am a committed professional who is constantly maintaining and enhancing expertise.
